To those who have played around with LLM code generation more than me, how are they at debugging?

I’m thinking of Kernighan’s Law: “Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.” If vibe coding reduces the complexity of writing code by 10x, but debugging remains just as difficult as before, then Kernighan’s Law needs to be updated to say debugging is 20x as hard as vibe coding. Vibe coders have no hope of bridging that gap.

The conclusion ought to be that billionaires shouldn’t exist. Even if they donate most of their wealth, they will still donate in ways that aren’t necessarily solving real problems.

This sort of thing can’t really be done in capitalism at all. Open Source (as it was advanced by Eric S. Raymond and the Mozilla Project back in the late 90s) was always stuck in a capitalist way of thinking.

In a society where everyone has their basic needs met and people are expected to contribute what they can, writing FOSS can be your contribution.

Part of what saved AMD was spinning off their fabs into a separate company. Besides the cash flow, they could focus on design and weren’t hitched to what their own fabs could produce. They could choose the best fab contract they could afford.

Pat Gelsinger floated the idea of spinning off the fabs, but the US government shut it down as part of the deal for building new fabs with government money. The fabs that Intel may not even finish now.

Another factor for AMD was having their SoC in consoles. Kept some cash flow going when they desperately needed it. Intel doesn’t have that benefit, either. AMD owns the PS5 and Xbox, while Nvidia has Nintendo. Steam Deck-like handhelds are a small but growing market, and all the ones people want to buy run AMD.

So the question comes up of what Intel can even do for cash flow. Their GPU division might start showing real profit in another generation, but they have to survive that long while taking a loss. One more uncompetitive generation of CPU releases will probably doom their core product, and the best they can hope for there is “not completely suck”. The datacenter market was holding on because Intel has traditionally been rock solid stable, but that argument was killed with the 13th/14th gen overheating issues (which did affect equivalent server processors, as well). Their other hardware, like networking chipsets, comes with the same dark cloud looming over it, and it isn’t enough to keep the company running, anyway.

That’s just “the worst possible consequences won’t happen”. The danger at higher orbits is that things wouldn’t come down, and we couldn’t safely launch rockets past that orbit. That wouldn’t happen here, but destroying everything in LEO would still be pretty bad. Astronauts would likely die.

What we really need to compete against Starlink’s network full of small satellites threatening a Kessler syndrome incident is a second network full of small satellites threatening s Kessler syndrome incident. And a third and a fourth.

Or put fiber everywhere.

It’s “more secure” because there’s a specific company to blame when it goes wrong.
